Pinterest is the latest social bookmarking sites. Like Digg, Delicious, and others, Pinterest allows you to mark, or pin in this case (the English word "pin") a site so you can share it with your friends and, of course, find it later .

And Pinterest is much more than that. This is a community, and as such, it offers more opportunities for interaction than other platforms bookmarking. In this sense, Pinterest is more like Facebook or Twitter.

Pinterest users are encouraged to share ("repin"), other content, and "like" or leave comments on other users' PIN. You can also share your PIN on Facebook and Twitter. (It is interesting to mention here that you must have a Facebook or Twitter account to join Pinterest, although you are not required to display your PIN).

Note: As you can see, Pinterest uses an English vocabulary (PIN REPIN, PINBOARD etc ...). In the following, I will use the English terms interchangeably or personal translation into French

What is the interest for an e-merchant or a blogger?

Traffic. This is so that you need for your interest in Pinterest. According to comScore, Pinterest alone accounts for nearly 4% of all traffic on the Internet referenced. While this may not seem like much, note that YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn combined have less than 1.5% of the reference traffic.

Also note that Pinterest receives about 1,360,000 visitors a day, and more than 12 million users. On average, users tend to stay on the site 15.8 minutes, three full minutes longer than Facebook users. Although these data concern the English version, there is a safe bet that the arrival of the French version will follow a similar course.

So it is good to prepare yourself before anyone else and create your account now before "the big rush."

Indeed Pinterest is growing at a phenomenal rate. Between May 2011 and January 2012, Pinterest has increased by almost 3000% in the number of unique visitors. Obviously, they found something that works for the people, and as an entrepreneur, merchant or artisan, it's up to you to take part in this opportunity.

I hope you can see how Pinterest can be important when it comes to generating traffic to your website. We will return in more detail later. For now, I just wanted to let you know that Pinterest is not a short-lived fad. This is a good marketing tool, and if you do not take advantage, it's a shame.

Who is using Pinterest?

"Everybody" could be the answer that comes to mind, given the explosive popularity of Pinterest, but it is not entirely true. In fact, many people who work directly or indirectly with internet are not yet included ...

Pinterest seems to appeal mainly to women, who account for about 70% of the 1.36 million daily visitors. 28% of users have much higher average incomes (according to Mashable.com), so they have money to spend. Half of Pinterest users have children, and the average age is between 24 and 35 years.

If this is your target market, then you would do well to talk to you on Pinterest. But if it is not yet the case, do not worry. With millions of users (more new every second) your market is safe to navigate.

And do not make the mistake of thinking that men have no influence on Pinterest. In fact, four of the ten most followed are men, so if men are your market, you also now have a great opportunity. And do not forget that it is then Anglophone statistics: these trends may be different for the Francophone population. Time will tell.
